Our Impact

Green Initiatives

Serving as a leader in environmental initiatives, preservation
of green space, and tree conservation.

The Galloping Green Intitiative

On behalf of the Kentucky Horse Park, the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation’s Galloping Green Initiative seeks to establish an enduring example of environmentally sustainable practices to promote, restore, and conserve the equine landscape at the Kentucky Horse Park for current and future generations of visitors and exhibitors.

The initiative embraces attainable carbon reduction goals and sustainable practices by exploring the five
PILLARS of Sustainability we’ve identified as:

Trees, Watershed, Energy Efficiencies, Building Green and the 3Rs (Reduce, Recycle, Reuse)

In doing so we aim to s
et an example of environmental stewardship for the benefit of the Park and its visitors as well as for other equestrian facilities and parks.

To accomplish sustainable goals,
evolve opportunities and support approved projects, we continuously seek to align with the state of Kentucky, city of Lexington, and the University of Kentucky.

Green Initiatives

Progress

From meetings to construct concepts to initiatives moving forward, since 2024 the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation’s Galloping Green Team has laid the groundwork for projects that have and will achieve a variety of sustainable goals.

  • AT THE FOREFRONT: Lee Carter, Kentucky Horse Park President, and Megan Fellows of Carbon Hoofprint,, along with R. Scot Evans of Green is the New Blue, led a Sustainability Panel at the 2026 USEF Annual Meeting. Engaging and informative, the presentation illustrated that, with support from the Foundation’s Galloping Green Initiative, the Kentucky Horse Park is paving the way for sustainability at large equestrian venues.

Gardens at the Park by Jon Carloftis

Landscape plans for the enhancement of the Park’s Visitor Center entrance and the Man o’ War fountain walkway by Jon Carloftis are approved and underway. Planting began spring 2026!

Collaboration With UK

Working closely with the University of Kentucky Department of Landscape Architecture, the Foundation developed and executed a two-phase assignment in Q4 of 2025 where students created innovative sustainability concepts for the Park.

Green Building

The Foundation is forging ahead with green development plans to build a sustainable storage facility.

Efficencies

The Park is working with a company to explore a variety of energy efficiencies that will benefit the Park and all its visitors. This includes, but is not limited to, rooftop solar, rainwater harvesting , EV charging and more.

Just a Few of Our Existing Green Initiatives

  • Kentucky Horse Park Tree Fund

Some of the most important resources at the Kentucky Horse Park are our trees.  The Park is home to over 1,000 trees – representing 75 different species – with some dating back to the late 1700’s.  They beautify our park grounds, providing shade and shelter to our guests – both human and equine.  They are historic, iconic – and irreplaceable.

The Kentucky Horse Park Foundation is embarking on an ambitious fund-raising campaign to protect the trees of the Kentucky Horse Park, both now and in the future.  We are establishing the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation Tree Fund to help us create a long-term plan with professional arborists, with the two-fold mission of attending to the well-being of those trees already living on the Park and establishing a new on-site tree nursery to ensure that replacement trees are always growing and available for future generations to admire and enjoy.
