Now in its fifth year, the Kentucky Horse Park Literacy Program promotes the love of the horse and the love of literacy by connecting horse-themed books, children and horses. The Kentucky Horse Park’s dedicated staff and volunteers have created a program for Kentucky’s second-grade and fourth-grade school children with horse-themed books, hands-on horse experiences, teacher’s curriculum and much more!
The program consists of several components, beginning with an in-school program where students are given a horse-themed book of their own to read and keep. New in 2014, participating teachers are also invited to bring their students to the Kentucky Horse Park for special "Literacy Days" field trip. These specially designed days will give students the opportunity to visit each barn on the park while exploring an overarching theme related to the book that they read.
The second grade book, Finnegan and Fox - the Ten Foot Cop, was written by Helen C. Wilbur. Helen C. Wilbur tells the delightful tale of a New York City police officer and his beloved horse. It will be delivered to nearly 1,000 students at their schools accompanied by a live horse. The day the books arrive, the students participate in hands-on activities that enhance the story of Finnegan and Fox. A Kentucky Horse Park Committee, including local elementary school educators, has created a second-grade teacher's curriculum with supplemental information and equine themed activities.
The Kentucky Horse Park only accepts applications for the second grade program from schools within a 15 mile radius from the Park due to school visits, staff and volunteer availability, and funding limitations.

The fourth grade book, Perfect Timing: How Isaac Murphy Became One of the World's Greatest Jockeys, was written by Patsi Trollinger, and ties in beautifully to studies in Kentucky History, African American history, and the Thoroughbred industry. It will be shipped directly to the schools of those students participating in the program. Over 3,000 students will read the books with their teachers, utilizing the curriclum developed by the author herself and distributed by the Kentucky Horse Park Literacy Program Committee.

The "Literacy Days" field trip will take place in spring of 2014. As students travel around the Park, they will not only learn about their specific book, but they will also be exposed to every facet of the Kentucky Horse Park. This visit will include interactive lessons, live equine shows, a visit to the International Museum of the Horse and more!
The cost of the program is $10 per student. The cost includes a copy of the book and the Kentucky Horse Park field trip admission and guided program. The cost can be waived by applying for the Kentucky Horse Park Literacy Program scholarship. Reading the book and attending the field trip are both required to participate in the program.
Bus scheduling and transportation costs are the responsibility of the schools.
The Kentucky Horse Park Literacy Program thrives because of the support of its volunteers!
During second-grade school visits, the volunteers interact with the students by helping with a variety of activity stations, handing out copies of the book and introducing students to a live horse.
Volunteers also help during the "Literacy Days" field trips to the Kentucky Horse Park. Volunteers will guide schools to stations, help with educational activities, and assist staff with lessons.
